A Brighter Look at the Systems of a Warehouse

An Interview with Brighton, a Systems Analyst, at R&S

From working inside one of our Knoxville warehouses to implementing system-wide technology across all of our 3PL facilities, Brighton has a unique story with R&S that’s worth the read.

Recruited by a friend, he was brought on to help manage a new customer at the KX1 warehouse. (Quite literally there was a new customer in the building.) He learned how to manage this customer’s shipments, SKUs, typical inventory turns, and pain points. Brighton shares, “It was a great experience because it taught me so much about onboarding a new client and all that goes into that process.”

He wanted to continue growing and saw himself in management one day if the opportunity arose. He’d been working in the warehouse for a little while when that time came. With a background in technology before his time in the warehouse, he was primed and raring to go for a new role to implement a company-wide technology initiative.

A little side note here. Whether you’re new to the industry or not, you may have heard of a WMS (warehouse management system) and how vital it is to a customer and to a 3PL like us. A WMS is a software platform that integrates all of a customer’s data such as inventory, shipments, and SKUs and optimizes it with the warehouse layout, capacity, inventory turns needed, and locations. It’s almost like the brain of a warehouse. Implementing something like this is a big, complex task!

This is just what Brighton did. Coming up to speed with another team member, Brighton jumped in and started working on Infor and implementing it with the S3 group., which you can see pictured below.

You may be thinking….that’s a lot to go from receiving shipments, loading & unloading them, and running a forklift of inventory to working on a computer with software in 6+ different warehouses. Brighton said, “It was a very easy transition because the people in the company set me up for success and were really understanding as I got up to speed.”

When talking about R&S company culture, he said, “The team was willing to help and guide me, and I was given lots of learning opportunities.” As a 3PL company in the southeast and East Coast, shipments never stop. However, we try our best to use every opportunity to learn, to get better, and to steward what we’re entrusted with. All that to say though too, we have a lot of fun and maintain a balance between work and life. Pictured below is Brighton with his wife at a local UT game.

Now several years in, Brighton manages and maintains technology across multiple warehouses with another team member. KX1 still remains his favorite warehouse since it holds great memories and people he started out with. Looking ahead, he’s excited to be a part of growing the IT department and watching it expand.

The future is bright here (pun intended).

Jokes aside, Brighton is one of our team members that is always a joy to highlight. From managing a new customer in the day-to-day operations of a warehouse to integrating systems and technology across all of our 3PL facilities, he does so with agility and humility.
